Police have released three National Unity Platform-NUP supporters who were arrested on Friday for allegedly insulting President Yoweri Museveni at a campaign rally in Bukomansimbi district.

Police have released three National Unity Platform-NUP supporters who were arrested on Friday for allegedly insulting President Yoweri Museveni at a campaign rally in Bukomansimbi district.

Alex Ssempijja, Fred Kalanzi and Abdul Ssentamu who recently defected from the National Resistance Movement- NRM party have been released on police bond.

It is alleged that the trio addressed the NUP joint campaign rally at Kawoko Playgrounds in Butenga Sub County where they abused the person of the president. Police dispersed he same rally twith teargas and live bullets.

Sowedi Manisuri the Bukomansimbi District Police Commander says the suspects allegedly insulted President Museveni and the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi who is also NRM flag bearer for Bukomansimbi Woman MP seat. 

The group is also are facing charges of assault and blocking police officers while they executed their lawful duties. Three police officers including the DPC were injured by stones that were pelted by NUP supporters who attended the campaign rally.

According to Muhammad Nsubuga, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Commander, the trio was granted temporary release as investigations into the case continue.
