Police in Kireka are investigating circumstances underwhich a boda boda cyclist attempted to commit suicide by setting self-ablaze.

Emmanuel Kabanda whose motorcycle registration number UDU 610H had been impounded by police, attempted to kill himself when they refused to give it back.

At about 8:30 PM on Sunday night, a team of Police officers from Kireka went on a routine normal patrol to enforce Presidential directives on COVID-19.

In the process, they impounded 10 motorcycles as they were moving beyond curfew time.

Among them was Kabanda’s bike, which was parked at the station yard with the rest.

Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson told the press this morning, that at about 9:00 PM the suspect went to the station and demanded for his motor cycle and was told to return in the morning to claim it.

However, the suspect left the station only to be seen after a short about 30 meters away from the Police station running, burning, and calling for help.

“Police officers mobilized and poured water on him to save his life. He was then rushed to kirudu Hospital for medical treatment” Owoyesigyire says.

Statements have been recorded from all the witnesses and exhibits that include a mineral water bottle that he allegedly used for buying petrol, burnt shirt, shoes and others have been recovered and transferred to Government Analytical Laboratory for analysis.
