The Police in Katwe shot and killed one person on Thursday night following an illegal eviction that was being conducted at around 9pm in Kyampa Zone, Makindye II Parish in Kampala City by a group of over 20 people,  armed with clubs, hammers and machetes.

Asp Luke Owoyesigyire Deputy PRO Kampala Metropolitan Police says the armed violent group immediately started demolishing rental units that were occupied by 9 families.

‘We strongly believe that they were hired to carry out an illegal eviction and it could be the reason why they were carrying it out at night under the cover of darkness by-passing the right procedures” Owoyesigyire says.

He added that the affected families and concerned residents informed police at Katwe about the disturbing conduct of the armed and violent group, prompting the officers to respond immediately.

Upon arrival however, the police response teams tried to block and stop the destruction of houses and illegal eviction but faced resistance from some of the members of the group.
“During the scuffle one member of the armed and violent group was fatally wounded. Which prompted the other members to flee. We strongly condemn such acts which are unlawful, and we are going to make sure that the perpetrators including the mastermind are arrested for Prosecution” Owoyesigyire added.

Police officers secured the scene and continue to provide security to the affected families, while the body of the deceased person was conveyed city mortuary mulago for postmortem.
