22 people are in Police custody in Kagadi district after they were found defying the guidelines put in place by the government to combat the spread of COVID-19.

According to Stephen Kamar, the Kagadi District Police Commander, the suspects were picked on Saturday night from Kasubi Pub in Kagadi town at around 11:40PM.

Kamar says eighteen of them were football fans who were found watching live football matches on TV and four ladies who are bar attendants, while others were found busy drinking alcohol.

He added that the suspects whose names are withheld for fear of jeopardizing police investigations, were found watching a football match, gambling, dancing, playing cards and taking alcohol during the wee hours of the night which is contrary to the COVID-19 directives issues by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

“Some of the suspects are prominent people working with banks, the district headquarters while others work with big Non-governmental organisations- NGOs” Kamar said.

He says the suspects will be produced before court to be charged with disobedience of lawful order after investigations onto the matter is complete.

Kamar warned bar owners who open their businesses during the lockdown to stop because it is in violation of the directives issued by the President.
The Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza also says most night clubs in the region have silently resumed operations following the resumption of the English premier league, a thing he says will not be tolerated.
