The Police in Kyotera district have in custody two midwives attached to Kalisizo General Hospital over the death of an expectant mother for due to alleged negligence of duty. Betty Namubiru and Faith Nakamatte are alleged to have declined to attend to an expectant mother who visited the facility on Tuesday night after she couldn’t pay 160,000 Shillings. The victim is Gaudencia Namata who failed to offer a sum of 160,000 Shillings to the duo before aiding her to deliver the child. Namata, a resident of Buzilanduulu village in Kasasa sub-county, Kyotera district failed to raise the money and was abandoned in the facility despite the unbearable labour pain. Eyewitnesses say the deceased alongside her attendant arrived at the hospital close to midnight and pleaded to be allowed to raise the money the following day, but her plea yielded no empathy until she breathed her last. Namata’s death aroused anger from the patients and attendants at the hospital, who retaliated by beating up staffs, vandalizing window and door glasses, and destroying other hospital properties as they allegedly protested against the unbecoming conduct of the staff at the facility. Police officers were called in to restore order, leading to the arrest of the two midwives who are currently detained at Kalisizo Police Station. According to Innocent Tumwine the Officer in Charge the station, the search is on for Emmanuel Ssekyeru the Hospital Administrator who could have been an accomplice in the matter. Doctor Edward Muwanga the Kyotera District Health Officer regretted the incident and said that besides the Police investigation, they were, as management going to carry out a general audit on the conduct of health workers at the hospital for purposes of preventing similar incidents.Betty Namubiru,Buzilanduulu village,Gaudencia Namata,Kyotera district,Innocent Tumwine,Kalisizo General Hospital
