Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s first post-independence leader has died Thursday night 5th September 2019.

His successor, President Emmanuel Mnangagwa announced Mugabe’s passing at 10:06PM on twitter. “It is with utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former president Cde Robert Mugabe” he wrote.

President Mnangagwa added that; “Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

According to family members, Mugabe died after battling ill health, and had been in hospital in Singapore since April.

One of Africa’s longest serving Presidents, Mugabe was ousted in a military coup in November 2017, ending three decades in power.

He won Zimbabwe's first election after independence, becoming prime minister in 1980. He abolished the office in 1987, becoming president instead.

While the rest of the world sent their sympathies, many Zimbabweans celebrated their former President’s death. They wrote on twitter expressing disappointment in the former leader and his successor Mnangagwa.
