Sadness has gripped the Muslim community in Jinja after the death of Sheikh Juma Katega, their district kadhi.
Ismael Kabuye an Imam at Taquwa Mosque says Katega 69 died on Sunday night at Islamic health centre in Jinja town. "He had suffered multiple organ failure, heart disease, among others since 2014. Since January this year, he has been in and out of hospital," Kabuye says.
According to Ibrahim Shamil Byakika the Busoga region Muslims spokesperson, the deceased has been sick since 2014 and in 2016, he was taken for heart surgery in India.
His condition is however said to have deteriorated and he has been in that situation till he met his death. He said that last week, Katega's condition worsened and he was taken to Islamic clinic.
"After admission, he relapsed into coma and never talked again as he lay motionless on his hospital bed surrounded by family and medics," he said.
The late Khadi had worked hard to protect Muslim property within Jinja district, including the cemetery next to Jinja regional referral hospital.
According to Byakika, the deceased had also protested against a sect of tabliq Muslims bent on grabbing a two-acre piece of land located along Mvule crescent in Jinja town.
